Australian Trials champion weekend coaching at Melbourne Moto-Trials Centre

The Melbourne Moto-trials Centre based just 25 minutes from the CBD played host to multi-Australian Outdoor Champion and 2016 Australian X-Trial champion Kyle Middleton for a weekend of coaching and a fund raiser of the Australian Trial des Nations team going to France later this year.

Saturday’s session had Zac Mularczyk (Ex), Tim Lewis (A), Matt Hannaford & Peter Wines (B) with Michael Brady & Rob Austin in C+.
Initial talks revolved around bike, suspension and general setup before heading out to the practice area where many pointers and guidance were given over wet off camber rocks & logs, slat wall variation techniques and finally a couple of large square concrete blocks where a stationary start with the front wheel on the face.

Sunday’s session had Sam Jobson (C+), Steve Brown, Greg Chalmers & Jaco Coetsee (C), Anthony Day, Cristian Ambrozie, Daryl Glen, Hein Daniels & Matthew Nally in the novice grade.

Again bike setup, tyre pressures and riding position was explained before heading out to zig zag log area where constant full lock right to left hand turns on wet slippery off camber grass before it turned into a mud & slush mess.
Next was the various ways of getting over rocks with final obstacle being the use of the slat wall. This had a number of novices rattled but Kyle’s guidance had most riders having multiple attempts and many laughs along the way.

At the end of the day, Kyle gave all riders a demo using his enormous talent and skills riding over many wet, slippery rocks that most of us can’t even walk over.
As like most of Australia, constant rainfall over both days put a different perspective on most of the ways we ride in the dry conditions.

On a personal note, I’ve found Kyle to be a very down to earth guy with great coaching skills and technical ability to help any rider irrespective of what level they ride.

Not only did the OMCC riders get great tutoring over 2 days, we were able to raise $1700 for the TDN fund and hopefully other clubs will take up this same opportunity.
Don’t forget, other riders you may choose from is Chris Bayles of Tasmania and Conner Hogan of South Australia.
There is still some way to go in reaching their fund goal so read more about their progress on their campaign page (https://www.gofundme.com/AustralianTdNteam).

Trials Development Report – VTS Round 2 – 14th May

We met up at a great new property in Ravenswood. The weather was perfect over the weekend with a dozen or so vehicles camping from vans, tents and swags. There were a couple of nice fires burning at night with good tunes from Rob Austin, and the kids running around till late with torches. It was a great night had by all.

The trials site has lots of rocks with great rolling terrain, with a well set trial with a short and easy walk between sections.

We had 8 kids & a small group of senior riders, working on turning, wheel placement and riding up and down big rocks.

A big thanks to Hillary Stephens and Jacob Whittle for their help with the kids – they had a great time, and are still talking about it today. Thanks again.

Trials Coaching Day with Alexz Wigg

The coaching day started nice and early 8.30am at the damp & cool Sedgwick site. Thankfully, after lunch, the sun was out and it was a perfect days riding finishing well after 4.30pm (That is a big day of riding!)

It started with some motorcycle set up advice with Alexz talking about different terrain’s, different styles, etc.

First there was a light warm up round, then into some good solid training sections. We had C+, B & A. experts’ sections. As each rider improved Alexz would then introduce another obstacle, like tightening the turns, to make the riders work just that little harder.

There was a great selection of sections from: tight and fiddly and then progressing onto bigger rocks including big undercut rocks. Some of the exercises were old fashion hill climbs & descents. The day included many different challenges and a great Variety of riding exercises. Challenging and very enjoyable.

Alexz has a great riding style and has developed many ways of coaching showing the riders how to build confidence in each’s own ability and to try and improve one’s self.

Riding with Alexz was a great day out with heaps of fun, informative chats and a wealth of knowledge about our great sport of motorcycle trials.
If you are serious about improving your trials riding and you have a chance to ride with a real world class champion (“and a really good bloke”) then an Alexz Wigg coaching day … is a definite must do!
